Prior to the establishment of MTU SA in 2001, a substantial number of MTU powered gensets were sold into the South African market. These engines range from the 8 cylinder series 396 to the 20 cylinder series 956 engines used for standby power in various sectors of the South African market. A number of these engines have been running for 20 to 30 years and are still in service. We are presently engaged in overhauling 20 cylinder 956 series engines for mining companies.
After 2001, MTU SA entered the local market with the successful 2000 and 4000 series genset engines. Our brand exposure market share grew steadily in a highly cost sensitive and competitive market.
During 2006, the local demand for electricity outstripped supply from the national grid with resulting excessive periods of power outages. The demand for cost effective emergency power grew rapidly and customers soon recognised the reliability and life cycle cost benefits of MTU 4000 and 2000 series genset engines. The brand awareness and sales of these engines grew exponentially since then.
A large number of MTU Series 2000 and 4000 standby genset engines are now in service in Sub Sahara African powering production facilities, retail structures, computer and telecommunication centres, sport stadiums, churches and hospitals.
The 18V2000 has become one of the most popular engines on the market and the 20V4000 is one of the largest and most powerful engines sold in the South African diesel genset engine market by MTU South Africa.
We are now firmly established as a major player in this market segment and until recently, our main focus in this application was on engine sales and after sales services for such engines. We have since established an in-house system capability for power generation that allows MTU SA to offer improved products and services to genset manufactures, users and operators.
