Mining

Africa is blessed with an abundance of minerals and metals and mining is therefore a major contributor to the economies of many Sub-Saharan countries. Mining activities range from difficult deep shaft underground mining to huge dusty opencast operations in hot and high temperature regions – considered to be some of the world’s toughest mining environments. Our mining products and services have a firmly established reputation for reliability and cost effectiveness in extreme African operating conditions.

During the last decade, the number of MTU Series 4000 C&I engines have grown from a zero base to 120 units with a cumulative total of more than 2 million operating hours. With recorded availability figures in excess of 94% and excellent fuel consumption characteristics, our engines have become the preferred option of many major mining houses. MTU South Africa successfully concluded maintenance and repair contracts to provide on-site services on a 24 hour basis for MTU engines at Anglo Platinum’s Mogalakwena mine at Mokopane, Exarro Coal’s Grootegeluk coal mine at Lepalale and the Kumba’s Sishen iron ore mine in the Northern Cape.

The Detroit Diesel Series 40, 50 and 60 mining engines are firmly established as reliable and cost effective workhorses in both underground and surface mining applications in our region. The number of Mercedes Benz OM 904LA, 906LA and 926LA engines in mining application is also growing steadily with excellent reliability and economy figures recorded since their introduction into the latest versions of trackless machines used in underground mining operations.

MTU South Africa has the capability and capacity to meet the most demanding customer’s needs for engine products, manpower, skills , parts, and support equipment - on a 24/7 basis if so required. In order to meet new and refurbished engine requirements, MTU SA established the know-how, support systems and engineering capability to supply replacement engines to existing customers and to re-power mining machines with the latest technology MTU mining engines.
