Governmental Vessels

The sea route around the horn of Africa has always been important to world trade. Recent African political and socio-economic conditions created security concerns that resulted in a greater demand for the protection of commercial shipping using this route. The urgent problem of food security in Sub Saharan Africa created an imperative for government agencies in the region to ensure efficient harvesting and protection of offshore and inshore marine resources.

The South African Navy is one of our oldest and most valued customers, and their fleet is almost exclusively equipped with MTU engines. The MTU facility in the Simons Town Support Centre (SSC), supported by resources from our workshops in Cape Town and Johannesburg, is fully equipped to provide a comprehensive service for the South African Navy’s inventory of the MTU 1163, 396 and 538 engines.

The selection of the MTU series 4000 engine by our environmental protection agency for their coastal and offshore patrol vessels; and a newly built marine oceanic research vessel, was predominantly based on the engine’s ability to meet stringent reliability, performance and life cycle cost criteria.
