Tognum introduces new MTU Automation System for Naval Vessels

The MTU automation system Callosum provides the most advanced Monitoring and Control System for naval vessels currently available on the market.

Friedrichshafen/Paris, 28 October 2008. Tognum Group will be introducing their new MTU brand automation system Callosum at the Naval Trade Show “Euronaval” (27 - 31 October 2008 in Paris). This system has been developed for military applications in vessels such as corvettes, frigates or governmental vessels. Callosum continuously monitors and controls all areas and functions of the vessel’s technology and ensures the reliability of the on-board systems. Callosum is a modular system, consisting of four core sub-systems: a monitoring and control system (Callosum MC - Integrated Monitoring and Control System), a vessel security system (Callosum DC - Battle Damage Control System), a training system (Callosum TR - Onboard and Land-Based Training System), as well as a service and maintenance system (Callosum MT - Maintenance Support System). 3-click technology ensures quick and fully efficient operation of these systems. Rainer Breidenbach, Tognum COO of the Engines division, explains: “With this highly sophisticated automation system, MTU not only highlights its leading role in the area of classic engine manufacture, but also in ship automation.“

At the heart of the MTU automation system Callosum is the integrated Monitoring and Control system Callosum MC. It enables the ship’s crew to monitor the entire propulsion system, the on-board power supply and sub-systems throughout the entire ship.

The Callosum MC module monitors and controls the entire propulsion system with the latest generation of remote control plant control systems RCS (Remote Control System) and the monitoring and control system MCS (Monitoring and Control System). Complete propulsion plants and systems include CODAG systems (Combined Diesel and Gas Turbine). Sub-systems include the on-board power supply system or monitoring and control tasks for doors, tanks, bilges or process-coolers.

The vessel security system Callosum DC is a Battle Damage Control System geared to the “battle within“. This module of the MTU automation system Callosum protects against and limits damage due to leaks, fire and NBC contamination following collisions or weapon strikes.

The vessel security system Callosum DC protects against and limits damage due to leaks, fire and NBC contamination following collisions or weapon strikes. 3-click technology ensures that every operation can be accomplished with no more than three mouse-clicks – which is particularly important in military applications, where quick decisions are at a premium.

Perfect mastery of the MTU automation system Callosum under all circumstances is only possible through intensive crew training. MTU has integrated an onboard and land-based training system: Callosum TR.

Callosum TR is a training system that supports the vessel’s crew in the perfect mastery of the vessel’s complex sub-systems. A customized software program facilitates the creation of particular scenarios designed to accelerate the crew’s decision-making capabilities.

The service and maintenance system Callosum MT constantly monitors all propulsion-related processes. If malfunctions occur or replacement parts are needed due to wear, the diagnostic systems alert the vessel’s crew. User-friendly visualization of all processes utilizes a uniform interface which can be accessed on every networked screen on board.

Callosum automation system technology is rounded off by Callosum MT, an integrated service and maintenance system designed for duty at sea without putting into port. An electronic diagnostic program constantly monitors all propulsion-related processes.

Apart from the new automation system Callosum, engine, drive and propulsion specialist Tognum will also present other products form their portfolio at the Euronaval, such as an engine from Series 2000 (Common Rail) for on-board power generation, as well as a CODAG functional model.
