Friedrichshafen, 9 June 2008.. The Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH has sold diesel engines worth over €5 million to South Africa for power generation applications. The engines are mainly intended for stand-by power generation to back up the public supply in the event of grid outages. In South Africa, the reputation of MTU engines for reliability was primarily gained in the mine hauling sector. The current order includes amongst others 53 engines of Series 2000 with power ratings of up to 1,000 kW as well as 10 engines of Series 4000 delivering up to 2,000 kW. In addition to stand-by power applications, the engines will also be used in mobile containers, e.g. on construction sites.

The Series 2000 and 4000 genset engines combine low emissions with low consumption characteristics. With nitrogen oxide emissions of below 1,500 and 1,700 mg/m³ exhaust respectively, they define new technical benchmarks in their respective power range. For mobile gensets, advanced MTU electronic equipment automatically matches the power to the ambient conditions, thus allowing the engines to achieve their maximum possible power at all times. In South Africa the site altitudes reach up to 2,000 meters and the temperatures up to 45°C.
