Today's sea mines, with their immense sensitivity, selectivity and artificial intelligence, can only be countered by craft developed specifically with this task in mind - MCMVs and drone vessels. It is their job to secure the theatres of operation for their own fleet and to maintain free passage for merchant shipping.

The conditions under which MCMVs and drone vessels have to operate place the most stringent demands both on the vessel itself and on the propulsion system: Absolutely minimal underwater acoustic emissions, high shock resistance and low-definition magnetic signatures. In addition, our engines obviously satisfy a range of other criteria such as compactness, outstanding power-to-weight ratios, reliability and dynamic reaction capabilities.

From the very start, MTU has played a leading a role in the development of propulsion systems with low-definition magnetic and acoustic signatures. MTU's MRK process reduces the magnetic activity emanating from all the ferromagnetic components to a stable minimum. Sophisticated installations and our own magnetic test and measuring facility mean that we can magnetically treat individual components such as crankcases, conrods, gear elements and drive shafts etc. as well as measuring entire engines, gearboxes, generators and propulsion plant.

In addition, integration of MTU's ship's automation systems means that the propulsion system can be operated largely automatically as can other areas of the vessel up to and including entire vessel control. In such configurations, even the housing and console structures comply with all the appropriate magnetic specifications.
