Corvettes and frigates occupy a dominant position within the world's navies. Whether they are called upon to fulfill tasks at a national level or at the behest of the UN, their primary duties are the protection of territorial waters, participation in global peace-keeping initiatives and crisis-management. They must be able to successfully counter threats from submarines (ASW), aircraft (AAW) and surface vessels (ASuW).
The reliability and availability of these craft are paramount priorities but equally essential are the long-range patrol and high-speed capabilities needed for rapid deployment to remote theatres of operation.
These duties determine the basic characteristics demanded of the propulsion plant:
MTU's tailor-made propulsion solutions for large naval vessels meet the most stringent naval requirements and specifications. CODAD (Combined Diesel And Diesel), CODOG (Combined Diesel Or Gas turbine) and CODAG (Combined Diesel And Gas turbine) plants can be supplied for installation and, where required, we will act as prime contractor to design and install entire propulsion systems.
In addition, integration of MTU's ship's automation systems means that the relevant propulsion configuration can be operated largely automatically as can other areas of the vessel, including damage control functions, up to entire vessel control.
That's why more than 70 navies place their trust in us.
